St Mary’s Open Day & Craft Fair 2020

St Mary’s Open Day & Craft Fair 2020

We are already planning the third of these events, held each May to commemorate the opening of our Community Garden at the rear of the church. The 2020 event will be held on Saturday 16th May, from 12.00 until 6.00. The poster and flyer was hand drawn by Brett Hudson, a talented young local illustrator.

The event will again be a joint undertaking with our friends from the Claude Jessett Trust, based at Tinker’s Park in Hadlow Down, which is a major centre for steam traction preservation. So we will have the ever popular steam miniature railway, a vintage fairground organ and a steam engine with a lovingly restored living van.

Classic Cars will be a new feature, with the East Sussex Morris Minor Club on site, together with some other 60s classics.

Country crafts will be represented, with a working forge and demonstrations of woodland coppicing and hurdling.

A range of local crafters will be exhibiting within the Church Hall, and also in the Hall Garden. At the time of writing, a small number of outside pitches remain available to exhibit and sell crafts, home produce, plants, bric-a-brac or memorabilia. Perhaps it’s time to clear out the attic? Pitches are only £20.

The church will be looking its very best, with our Victorian pipe organ providing some music. Members of the congregation will be on hand to talk to visitors about the fascinating history of the church, including Fr Hope Patten’s time here, and the Walsingham Chapel.  From our more recent past, there is an exhibition stand giving the history of restoring our ‘Top Field’ into the Community Garden, Buxted’s newest public open space.
